I met up with the folks at the new Out Central next to Outloud Books & Cafe. They are working hard to renovate the space which was the former headquarters for the Vote NO on 1 campaign.
Two board members are Stephanie Berger (L) and Kate Nelson (R) sit at what used to be the old conference table at THE CENTER on Berry Rd. (historical note:That gay community center was open from about 1989-1997. It was opened back then by my partner, Emily Whitcomb and Penny Campbell. Emily and I met there in the early ‘90’s while she was running things and I was producing Gay TV on community access television.)
Charles was installing a restroom when I arrived. He was busy putting lines in for sink.
Vickie Davis with the T-Vals has been doing framing and carpentry work. This was the first time we met in person. We met online and share a common political goal...impeach BUSH!
Great to finally meet you Vickie!
Kevin is the owner of Outloud! Books & Gifts. He’s been a huge supporter of Out Central and many activities, fundraisers etc within the GLBT community. He was nice enough to sit down and talk with me for the show about why he thinks we need a community space to gather.
Michael Birdwell has carpentry experience too and he wanted to do something to help our community. When I met up with him he was working at Out Central nailing furring strips up on a brick wall so they can hang drywall. If I was a gay guy I’d think he’s really cute and sweet.
And that’s coming from an old dyke...
Thanks to all of you for your hard work to make a difference and build a place we all can enjoy! Go check it out everyone...Church Street next to Outloud.
Peace and Love,
Val
