About 25 protesters awaited the presidential motorcade last week as Bush spent 1/2 of the day here. First he went to visit the owner of a factory that supplies Buns to McDonalds. Then he went to Opryland Hotel for a “town meeting.”
I got there just before 10am and tried parking in a local business parking lot where I saw a bunch of people standing around. I got my podcast gear and stepped out of the car. As I looked around I saw several holding small signs but couldn’t see what they said. I started plugging in my mic and stopped when this angry looking guy walked up to me. He said to leave, he followed me to my car and as I was putting my stuff in my passenger’s seat he said, “if you don’t work here you can’t park here.” Several people stared at me and I glanced at their sign...ADS Alarms. They were all with ADS and waiting to wave at the President. They stood on the grass right at the intersection where his motorcade would pass.
I pulled out of their parking lot, crossed the intersection and then saw the protesters. The policeman was waving them further away from the intersection. A large warehouse shielded them from Bush’s view when he passed. Unless he looked right just as he passed that warehouse, he never saw us. But the news media was right across the street...maybe they’d cover us. Well, maybe not.
But we were there. And here we are. Citizen Journalism is sometimes the only way to find out what’s going on these days.
You may not want to bother looking at us Mr. President but we are out here and our numbers grow everyday.
Peace & Love,
Val
